...the HVAC kicked on just as I was reaching the third floor, that familiar whoosh and clank that never fails to startle me. I paused, letting my eyes adjust to the sudden surge of noise, and that's when I noticed it. A single leaf, crimson and perfect, had found its way onto the worn carpet, just a few steps from the red book. It was still early in the season for such vibrant leaves to be falling, and this one seemed too pristine to have been carried on the breeze. I picked it up, rubbing its smooth surface between my fingers, feeling the slight give of its veins. It was almost as if it had been placed there deliberately, like a marker, guiding me to... what? I tucked it into the pages of my notebook, adding it to the collection of small, peculiar things I've been finding lately. The HVAC rumbled on, its rhythm steady, as if it too was waiting for something.
